The days are a bit cooler now, and we have a little less sunlight to get things done. If you think September was busy, wait until you see October!! Again, we have something special happening every weekend. We have Kakimochi on the first weekend, and the temple Bazaar on the third weekend. These are both major efforts to raise the funds necessary to allow our temple to function.
There are numerous events, programs and activities that occur at our temple or because of our temple. We each take part in varying degrees due to interest, time, and circumstance. However, no matter to what degree we participate, we cannot deny that YBA Retreats, MAP Workshops, Guest Speakers and Temple Classes benefit the well being of our temple and our Sangha. The Dharma School, the YBA, and the BWA each offer means to interact with fellow Buddhists within and beyond our Temple Sangha. It is in this way that we can come to know how the temple and the teachings are both relevant and applicable to daily life. The Choir, Sangha Taiko, PL Joggers and Striders, and the Wednesday lunch group each provide opportunities to share life and precious time.
The Three Treasures of the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha are not abstract spiritual ideals that are distant from us. They are the highest levels of life and time shared. Whether working on a project together or just "shooting the breeze", the time we spend is both important and meaningful. Please come out so that you can contribute as well as benefit from the wellness of our vibrant temple. People sometimes search here and there for family time and quality time...it's all here at the temple.
The second Sunday of the month will have a MAP-led service here. At the same time, a number of us will be traveling by bus to Sacramento for this year's National BWA Convention. Each time, more of the older ones find it difficult to travel and participate in this event. But more of the younger members see the value to go. Sharing in the fun and the difficulties of getting there sets the stage for "Sangha Moments" that become rich and lastingly deep memories and connections. Chanting with 500-700 voices connects us to our parents and grandparents and welcomes our children and grandchildren as we each find our place in the spectrum of all things.
The final weekend will bring us a Taiko Workshop led by members of Kinnara Taiko. Kinnara is affiliated with Senshin Buddhist Temple in LA. They are one of the three original taiko groups in America. Here at IOBT we try to utilize the play of Taiko to actualize the Three Treasures of Buddhism and not to indulge in the flash and flair of performance taiko. We invite groups and individuals who aim to do the same. Come and see what the difference is.
Gassho,
Rev. Dennis
Bazaars are so much fun - filled with food, a lively action, and a few good games like Bingo - plus you can get some great veggies and some cool needlework that someone has worked hours on. The "outside" hamburgers are always a great treat - plus the crunch of kakimochi.
So, come on out and help us in this annual event. Thank you for your continued participation and cooperation in our Bazaar Fund Raiser 2009. Please take a look at the worklist - find your name, and contact your chairperson if you are unable to meet this appointment.
Thanks!
Dyke Nagasaka, 2009 Bazaar Chairman
The IOBT Dharma School Teachers hosted the Northwest Dharma School Teachers League's workshop on Saturday, September 19th. We had representatives from Seattle, Portland and Spokane. Socho Ogui spoke at the opening service on compassion, love, kindness and wisdom. He said we make simple things complicated. After his Howa, our main objective was to learn how to prepare for a service. We broke up into three groups, one on Kansho and Onaijin set up and led by Kathy Chatterton, one on Leading the Sutra Chanting, led by Sharmon Sadamori, now Fujimoto, and one on HOw to Give a Dharma Talk, led by Anne Spencer. Thank you to the MAP people who taught us how much work goes into preparing for a service. Thank you to Jeanne Ozawa for playing the piano and also for all the goodies she made for our breakfast and lunch. We also had election of officers and Congratulations goes to President Lois Saito, Vice President/Secretary Sandy Belknap and Treasurer, Barb Braden from Spokane. They serve for 2 years.
Dharma School started on September 13th and we joined the adult service at 11 a.. Thank you to all the teachers for putting on the delicious hot dog, chili, potato salad, cookies and punch luncheon. It was enjoyed by everyone.
The Dharma School will continue joining in with a Family Service each Sunday at 11 a.m. We have classes at 10:30 a.m. in room #1.
The November IOBWA meeting will be held on November 8th, due to Eitaikyo on November 1st. The Fujinkai Memorial Service will be held on November 15th. The guest speaker will be Tanaguchi Sensei from the South Alameda Temple.
Wow!! We won't forget September 20th very soon. The spaghetti lunch was just one of the many activities that took place over that weekend. It was a great success. We were able to raise over one thousand dollars for the scholarship fund.
Thank you to Socho Ogui; Fujimoto Sensei; Sangha Taiko; Dharma school students, teachers and parents; YBA; Maty's; Mike Iseri and everybody who helped in the kitchen or set up tables; and to all of you that bought tickets. Thank you for all of your generous donations, especially Sue Uyeki and Roy Hasebe. A special thanks goes out to Marilyn Achterman, Shingo and Kie Fujimoto for your noodle cooking expertise.
With gassho,
Michelle Sadamori
