June 2007 Bulletin

Minister's Message by Rev. Fujimoto

June is here, and the month is packed with activities. Every weekend looks like the main event..you might just want to bring your sleeping bag and spend the whole month here at the temple.

June 3 is our Shotsuki Memorial Service and Fujinkai meeting. We will also be honoring Eshinni, Kakushinni and Lady Ohtani. This will be Ladies Day. In all aspects of history, it has been too often the case where the role of women had been downplayed if recognized at all. Throughout history, women have played significant and critical roles from positions of support as well as from positions of power. Recognition of those efforts has not always been in the forefront of male-dominant writers of history. Eshinni was the wife of Shinran Shonin. Kakushinni was his daughter, whose efforts initiated the growth of Hongwanji. Lady Ohtani has done much to bring focus on the continued efforts of women in the growth of Shin Buddhism. The activities of our Fujinkai and of all the women of this Temple are a continuance of these contributions.

June 9 and 10 celebrates the 60th anniversary of our Idaho-Oregon Buddhist Temple. The planning committee has been working hard to present a top-notch program to recognize and honor the efforts of all those who have led this temple to the position of significance that it holds today. Hard is it to be born into human life. Now, we live it. Difficult it is to hear the teachings of the Buddha. Now, we hear it. Through the efforts of others, then and now, we each have this opportunity to hear the Dharma and to have it be a meaningful part of our lives. Those who don't, just live with less. Watch for the deadlines and be sure to register...bring more than yourselves...bring your family and friends.

June 17 is Father's Day. We will have a Family Service, followed by a luncheon with world-famous IOBT chicken. This is a good way to start the day with family in mind...especially Dad.

June 30 is Japan Nite and the Obon Festivities. People from near and far look forward to this event. We have opportunity to play host and to welcome the greater community. It is like open house where many have a first opportunity to see the richness of the Buddhist traditions and the continued meaning and importance they hold in our lives. Please be a part of this effort...each person is important.

BCA/Jodo Shinshu Center Update

As announced at the Northwest District Council meeting last weekend, the December 2007 note of over $4 Million has been paid off with funds acquired or borrowed as a result of the National Council Meeting in March. So, we can breathe a sigh of relief, for now. JSC debt still amounts to over $9 million. This debt requires monthly payments with the first note being due in 2009. So, the fund raising campaign must still be successful in order to raise sufficient funds to make payments and to pay the debts off as they mature, or JSC faces being in default on their loans.

The financing committee has done amazing work in order to improve JSC's financial situation in the last few months. With the help of generous donors, we hope that JSC will emerge with sufficient funds to satisfy these debts as their maturity dates approach. Each of your efforts is sincerely appreciated. An updated donor list will be published in the bulletin as soon as it becomes available. Thank you for your support!

Temple News by Ann Nagaki

When spring arrives it seems like everyone starts cleaning the house, yard and gets rid of unwanted stuff. I felt like our Temple basement got a face lifting with new lights and a paint job. Thanks to our MAP members who have done the painting...they wanted to do something for the Temple to show their appreciation for the Temple support in their program. They are doing a fine job in assisting Rev. Fujimoto especially when he is out of town.

Mother's Day was so special...didn't have to cook, received a beautiful geranium plant and played Bingo (even I won a game). It was a special day for all the NW Temples that all mothers & ladies will receive a pink carnation which was prepared by the Dharma School. The men who barbecued chicken did an excellent job. I heard that Rev. Fujimoto chanted the Jusegei with the guys while they were attending the barbecue pits. Maybe that's why the chicken had a little religious flavor that made it so tasty. Thanks everyone and we mother's appreciated the day off from the kitchen. Ladies we have a payback time for Father's Day...it's coming up soon.

All of a sudden we're beginning to feel like we are feeling the crunch with meetings. The 60th anniversary committee is finalizing the program and entertainment for everyone. Be sure to read all the notices in the Bulletin...it's fun filled celebration with something for everyone. Deadline for registration is June 1st. We hope everyone will support the 60th committee by attending this anniversary...with so many of our Sangha members are in the over 80 years bracket we may not be around when the next big Temple celebration occurs.

Another big event is coming on June 30th..our annual Japan Obon Festival. First meeting was held on May 16th. Help is needed badly so if you have some grandchildren or visitors who like to give us a helping hand it would greatly be appreciated. At this time your donation of rice, vegetables, & $10.00 for chicken will be appreciated. (See Mae Nakano or Ruth Harada). Be sure to look in bulletin for schedules.

Temple will be open for Memorial Day weekend. Sunday - Sandy Belknap and Michelle Sadamori and Monday - Shiz Inouye and Yasuko Kino will be Temple setting. Thanks ladies for taking time doing this.

Don't forget Fujinkai Meeting June 3rd after adult services.

Japan Nite Obon Festival - June 30, 2007

Attention Chairman and Co-Chairman: Please call your committee to confirm their attendance. If they want to be on a different work committee, please refer them to Howard Matsumura, Michelle Sadamori, Mike Iseri or Mary Ann Shimojima for re-assignment. Calling your committee is important. Just as you, no doubt, appreciate being asked to help, your workers will appreciate your consideration of calling them.

Attention Workers: Calling the workers on a committee is a courtesy that requires the care and planning of the chairman and co-chairman. We understand that conflicting schedules and other conditions may make you unavailable to help. But, please give the chairman/co-chairman your best consideration when you are called. With all your help and cooperation, we look forward to a very successful Japan Nite! Thanks!
