In Japan, some traditional connections are paintings, sculptures, tea ceremony, flower arranging, music, and dance. Pottery has long been a part of this tradition. Anyone who has art or objects that might be displayed should contact George.
As we close 2003, we look forward to our 2004 schedule with some uncertainty due to our lack of having a resident minister. For this reason, the calendar we are providing is incomplete at this time. Each month, we hope to provide a preview of the near future, plus any other noteworthy items that you might want to put on your calendar.
Thanks for your continued patience during this transition. Thanks especially for all of the efforts made by so many members to help us maintain a regular service schedule, to Reverend Gibbs for all his time and effort in supervising our temple, and to the Oregon Buddhist Temple for their support and cooperation in sharing Reverend Gibbs with us.
Reverend Gibbs will be here January 24-25 for the ABA Party and HoOnKo Service. He'll be back February 13-15 for the NW Convention, and again in March to conduct Ohigan Service on March 7. If you would like to schedule a memorial service during his time here in January or March, please let Mike, Dave or Randy know and we'll make arrangements for you.
First of all, I would like to wish everyone a "Healthy Happy New Year"! It certainly was a fast 2003 that just slipped by us all. It seemed like we sure did squeeze a lot of activities in during the month of December. We had an unscheduled "Last Service" by Reverend Tada; Reverend Tada wanted to have a short service before they left our area. It was quite impressive with sadness about 40 members attended, bidding the Tada's farewell. The Temple would like to thank the Tada's for the beautiful altar bouquet they had donated for the service. We wish them a "Happy Retirement!"
The Temple Year End Service and Party were held on December 21st with the Ontario Town ladies doing their Toban duties. Thanks Ladies! They had prepared "bread bowls" with two kinds of soups, relish sticks, finger jello and cupcakes. For the services, we had our supervising minister, Reverend Gibbs, as our guest. Santa Claus even made his appearance for the Dharma School children.
The Fujinkai had their annual "Year End Party"; it was partially catered by Matsy's with 94 members, family and friends. Special invitations were sent out to our new sansei members. We would like to thank Taka Okita who donated some sashimi for the luncheon. After the lunch, bingo was played as part of the entertainment. Thanks to Hideo Harada and Yasu Teramura for being the callers.
As you all know, or should know, the NW Convention is being held in Ontario on February 13-15, 2004. The theme is "Everyone and Everything: My Teacher." We'll need everyone's support - let's make it the best convention ever. Kathy Chatterton and Roy Hasebe, chairpersons, and their committees, have been finalizing the program. Registrations need to be in the first part of January, so pick up your registration forms at the Temple ASAP or ask around.
Activity Days will resume on January 7th at 10:00 a.m.; Ontario Country will be tobans for the month of January for the demonstrations. For December activity days, Ann Nagaki made Beef, Barley and Mushroom Soup and Corn Bread, Mae Nakano made Black Been Chili and Cornbread Muffins, and Toshiko Horiuchi made Ohagi.
Congratulations to the Oregon Buddhist Temple on their Centennial celebration! We would like to thank Kikue Hondo for representing our Temple.
Just a reminder Fujinkai members - it's time for your 2004 dues. Our dues for this year are $5.00. Another big thank you goes to Jeanne Ozawa for making lunch on our meeting day, so that we don't have to go elsewhere. We appreciate it very much!
The teachers are doing their part to keep things going in the absence of a Reverend. They are not only chairing the services, but also giving the Dharma talk and setting up the onaijin.
December 7th: Bodhi Day. Chairman was Jamie Hasebe, who also gave the Dharma talk and Karen Hata read about Bodhi Day. The children placed Bodhi leaves on our Bodhi tree.
December 14th: Sandy Belknap was chairman and George Gledhill gave the Dharma talk.
December 21st: Mary Ann Shimojima was the chairman and Reverend Gregory Gibbs, our supervising minister, gave the Dharma talk. The 21st was also our year-end party, with a delicious lunch chaired by Jayne Kameshige and Karen Hata, and the Ontario town toban. The children enjoyed a visit from Santa.
