December 2003 Bulletin

Reverend Gregory Gibbs appointed as supervising minister

We have been advised by Bishop Hakubun Watanabe at BCA Headquarters that Rev. Gregory Gibbs of the Oregon Buddhist Temple has been assigned as supervising minister for the Idaho-Oregon Buddhist Temple. The Temple board would like to thank Bishop Watanabe, Rev. Gibbs and the Oregon Buddhist Temple for all that shall be involved in the course of supervising IOBT. We appreciate the care and support which is being afforded us while a permanent replacement is sought to fill the position which was made available after the retirement of Rev. Tada.

We were fortunate to have had the opportunity to see Rev. Gibbs in Ontario twice this year; once as the guest speaker for our Eitaikyo Service in October, and again at Rev. Tada's retirement party. Rev. Gibbs will attend his first service with us as supervising minister on December 21 for our Holiday Service and Luncheon. Besides the normal festivities, we shall also use this luncheon to welcome Rev. Gibbs to IOBT. Please come out to meet our supervising minister, Reverend Gregory Gibbs.

Temple Details

Life without a resident minister will present new challenges for us. Already, many have stepped forward and have been willing to lend a hand to make this transition more tolerable. If any of you are interested in participating in our services or planning, please let us know. We have many tasks which must be done to organize a service and we're happy for any help we can get.

In the absence of a resident minister, emergencies may be reported to any of your Temple co-presidents. We shall do our best to coordinate care for your needs in as timely a manner as possible. If you desire arrangements for memorial services, Rev. Gibbs plans to be here once a month and can take care of them while he is here. Announcements of which Sunday he will be present should be published in each months bulletin.

We sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding during this time. Please feel free to voice your opinions and ideas to us anytime. If you need to have a memorial service scheduled, please give one of us a call. Thanks very much. Your Temple Co-Presidents: Mike Iseri, Randy Kameshige and David Mizuta.

Convention Art

There will be a small display of art that relates to Buddhism. There is a long history for such art in all Buddhist cultures. In Japan, some traditional connections are paintings, sculptures, tea ceremony, flower arranging, music and dance. Pottery has long been a part of this tradition. Anyone who has art or objects that might be displayed, please contact George Gledhill at 642.2760.

Temple News by Ann Nagaki

Looks like our Temple has been busy with activities. Just as soon as we get one thing out of the way, another thing is waiting for us; sometimes we wonder when we will get a break, but then things would probably be very boring.

First of all, we like to thank everyone who came out for the annual Temple general cleanup. Attendance was a little low, but they got it done. It feels so nice to walk in the church to see everything in place, the windows cleaned, floors cleaned, and the alter a bit brighter.

As we all know, Rev. & Mrs. Tada will be in retirement after November 16th. This means our Temple will be without a minister. We will all have to put our heads together to keep the Temple going, so we will be asking for your help to pitch in on some of the duties. Check on schedule dates for some changes that may occur.

"Retirement Party" was held for the Tada's at the FRCC center. We would like to thank Mike Iseri and Randy Kameshige for making all of the arrangements. After dinner, all of the organizations (Dharma School, YBA, ABA, Fujinkai, Temple, NWBWA, NW Minsters, Oregon Buddhist Temple and the BCA) made their presentations. A delicious dinner was enjoyed by everone and was catered by Matsy's. We appreciat eall of those who attended the retirement party.

Fujinkai Memorial Services were held on November 16th. We were very fortunate to have Reverend Carol Himaka, from the Enmanji Buddhist Church as our guest speaker. We would like to thank Rev. Himaka for taking time to prepare for a discussion period on Saturday, November 15th. We appreciate Pam Suyematsu for making the refreshments for the discussion time. Also, thanks to Ruth Harada for being the Chairperson for the special services. Lunch was prepared and served by the Fujinkai board members.

Our Temple will be hosting the NW Buddhist Convention in February 2004. Chairpersons Kathy Chatterton and Roy Hasebe had a meeting on November 2nd to get things done in more detail. It's getting nearer for the year end activities.

Fujinkai will be having their Year End Party at noon after the Sunday services on December 14th. Special invitations will be extended to our new members and their spouses. As of this writing, it may be catered, or partly catered; in others words ladies, no cooking! So, come and joy (husbands are invited).

Wednesday Activity Days will be resuming on December 3rd, 10th and 17th at 10:00 a.m. Then, we will take a couple of weeks off for the holidays and resume on January 7th. Ask around for who will be demonstrating. If you have any ideas to share for craft or cooking, we would appreciate it very much.

Temple Year End Luncheon will be held on December 21st with Ontario Town laides as the Toban's. Also, this Sunday will be our Year End Services with our supervising minister, Rev. Gregory Gibbs of Portland, presiding. Your attendance will be greatly appreciated.

For our Shut-in's, we would like to say, "Don't ever forget, even for a day, how special you are".

Dharma School News by Mary Ann Shimojima

November 9th was Reverend Tada's final sermon to the Dharma School children with picture taking at the altar. The children made retirement cards for the Reverend and they were presented to him by Laurel and Grant Saito at the retirement dinner. Thank you Laurel and Grant for representing the Dharma School children.

Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, there won't be any Dharma School service on November 30th. We will have Bodhi Day service on December 7th and the year-end party on December 21st with the visitation of Santa Claus. Our supervising minister, Reverend Gregory Gibbs of the Oregon Buddhist Temple will be here for the December 21st service. There will be no church on December 28th.
